So the parade was launched on the 250th anniversary of Congress electing George Washington commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. Speaking of George Washington, he owned slaves, and his favorite was William "Billy" Lee. As the General's enslaved valet, Lee was also at Washington's side during the Revolutionary War.
